The gardens at our farm are an enrichening and sustainable means of empowerment for Supported Individuals. Individuals get to learn about gardening and gain hands-on farming experience through a work experience concept. Produce is donated to Elders, community members, local agencies and churches. Supported Individuals also have access to free vegetables for themselves, family and friends. We are further working toward opening a vegetable stand in the summer to create paid employment opportunities. For Individuals, the gardens foster a sense of responsibility and belonging to a wider community of care, and further promote healthy lifestyle choices and nutrition education.
In partnership with Northern Lights College, carpentry students built a cat shelter that is now a permanent structure on the farm. Injured, sick, abandoned and/or feral cats are rescued, given medical treatment, and moved to the farm. Supported Individuals interested in farm work are given the opportunity to work with and care for these rescued cats, playing a key role in their rehabilitation and recovery. This gives Individuals the chance to take on the responsibility of caring for a cat, as well as to spend quality time with their feline friends.
